Best Mexican restaurant we've ever been to. First impressions were the place was clean and modern. We were greeted promptly with chips and salsa and complimentary queso dip that happened to be delicious! Who does that?! They had us hooked there. Not to mention the freshness of the salsa, you can taste the cilantro and chunks of vegetables. They have a ginormous menu that neither of us looked at as my boyfriend got the special and I asked our server for a vegetarian option. The service we received was exceptional and we never had to ask for additional items. We will certainly be back next time we are in the area.

This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in the area. The food is excellent & reasonably priced, and the staff could not be friendlier. Highly recommend!

It's decent. My parents always make me come here whenever I'm in town. I will say it would never be my first choice for Mexican. In my opinion the place is a hit or missed, and the same goes for the staff. The restaurant has really never impress me so I give it 3 stars based on that. It's a meh.

My family of 6 all agree this place is both delicious and well staffed. Some of us are salsa critics, and we end up buying some of the hot to take home every time we go. The FREE white cheese dip is incredible too! It has great flavor, and compliments the salsa. As a Pescetarian and someone who celebrates cheat meals, I have it all at El Potro; the shrimp salad minus cheese is both flavorfil and filling, yet I can maintain my healthy lifestyle. Our family loves cheese, and this is a place where they don't skimp on the smothered in cheese area. If that's not your preference, they take specifications without question. I would recommend this restaurant for anyone wanting a great Mexican dining experience.

We were traveling from Denver to IL and stopped in to this place. Wow! So glad we did! Great service, awesome food and great prices! Who'd think we'd find great Mexican food in MO! We will be back when we are in town again. The lack of 5 stars was due to to fact that the manager walked by our table five times and couldn't be bothered to take a plate or two off our table.

I was born and raised in Bonner, and I have to say - they got all the good stuff after I moved! Came here before going to a T-Bones game with a family member. I was more than pleasantly surprised. The food was absolutely delicious (I had the.. chicken adobodo(?) - Service was quick, and our service was extremely kind. Love that they have both salsa and cheese dip when you sit down. Both of which were flavorful and tasty. The chips are thinner than most places, which is great too (love those thin-crispy chips) Great place, I will definitely be back next time I am around home.

A friend of mine recommended this venue to me and at first I was skeptical. Bonenr Springs isn't exactly the capital of Mexican food but one must be careful about judging a book and it's cover or is that a pot and a kettle? Who knows. So, my bestie and I hopped into the Black Bullet and fired out I-70 to El Potro. Obviously, it's very popular because the parking lot was packed. We were greeted pleasantly at the door and promptly seated. Drink orders taken and then it took us a while to decide what to order. The menu is nice and has lots and lots of choices. I had the big combo. Can't remember the whole name but it had a tamal, enchilada, taco, chile relleno...I ended up taking half of it home for a later meal. Oh boy was it good and the enchiladas and chile rellenos prepared perfectly! Great service and decent prices. We raved about the flavors and the quality of the food. It's good to know there's a great restaurant like this out west where food quality begins to take on a mundane atmosphere.

Being from Southern California this place is local and very convenient in my area for those Mexican cravings !! They can whip this up that are not on the menu no problem!! Friendly with a drive up counter love this place

Good chips and salsa. Just a real slight kick and the chips are served warm and crispy. I recommend the pollo Ixtapa. The cream sauce is smooth and ghe chicken is sauteed in white wine with mushrooms, onions and ponlano peppers. Good stuff in a relaxed environment.

Great food and service. In fact with the chips and salsa, we got a bowl of white cheese dip! Yum! The chips & salsa were perfect! I also asked for the hot salsa and it was great too! I ordered Carnitas Enchiladas Verdes. They were good, flavorful and filling. They have a large menu with chimis, enchiladas, salads, burritos, quesadillas, fajitas, tacos, tamales, appetizers and even sandwiches to choose from. They also have several drinks and deserts to choose from too. Very good place!

I love this place!!! The food is SO good!! It gets to your table very quickly after ordering so you can stuff your face. But really this place rocks. The cheese dip is amazing and comes with the chips & salsa. Drinks are good and pretty large. The flavor is seriously there on all the dishes I've ordered. The place is clean and is always relatively busy or it fills up quickly. Parking can kind of suck because you have to park on the side of the road (not busy roads) but still manageable. Heard they have a new drive thru window but haven't tried it yet. If you're in the area & craving some delicious Mexican food stop here!! Also - the "borracho" beans - which means drunk in Spanish are GREAT! Order them with your dish if it comes with a side.

El Potro Mexican Cafe located in Bonner Springs, KS has become one of my favorite places to visit. The place always stays busy. I would like to comment the service has improved since many of the prior reviews. We haven't had bad sercvice yet at this location. The wait staff is on point. They are very helpful. The menu has many great options. I've enjoyed several of the items on the menu. The alocohlic drinks are a bit strong-- but aren't they at every mexcian establishment? I highly recommend giving this location business. I would like to see it keep its doors open so I can continue to enjoy the many menu options. Stop in and enjoy some good food. You've got a fan! Save me a table cause you all get busy El Potro! Also they give free queso dip and salsa. Trust me that's a huge reason to keep returning.

It took a couple of times of coming here to find what I liked. Now I can't find something I don't like. They have authentic Mexican food prepared with care the wait staff is always very attentive. I will say that it gets pretty busy so we usually come at off peak times.

Been to this place several times and each time the food has been very good.. The taste is good, not overly seasoned. Prices are very reasonable and you get a good portion of food.

El Potro is the Mexican Restaurant in the old Mazzios building off 7 Hwy. Considering the quality of the other Mexican restaurants in Bonner, I wasn't expecting much. However, service was great. The guy that waited on us was very friendly, didn't come around too much or too little, was polite, and a great waiter. I ordered the shrimp quesadilla and was very surprised on how fresh it tasted. I loved how they give you chips, salsa, and cheese at the beginning-great first impression. I don't come to Bonner all that much anymore, but when I do, I'll most definitely be back!

Amazing amazing amazing is all I can say about this place. We were looking for a nice place to eat and it is sometimes hard to find that online. We are not from the area, so that makes it more difficult. Well, we found it and loved it. The free queso and chips are delicious and so are the burritos. If we are in the area again, we will be back for sure. Thanks for the great meal!!

This place is pretty tasty! They may not be my ultimate fav Mexican restaurant, but I do feel you get your moneys worth!! I love the free queso, and the chili rellenos are yum!! I try and go about once a month:-)

Best Mexican food in the area. Big competitor to Jose's. Very good tacos, great Marg's. Each time we visit there, we become more impressed with the food and service.

I've been to el Porto several times since they opened. My first impression wasn't good, but it has improved with each successive trip. Salsa and complementary cheese dip is a good start. They serve both for weekend breakfast too. So the translation of el Porto is pony. You gotta wonder why they chose that name. It's not on the menu. I especially enjoyed their breakfast. Portions are larger than the nearby Jalapeños, which has seen their business disappear. El Porto isn't great Mexican food, but it is real good at a fair price.

After a long weekend of soccer, we decided to stop for dinner in lieu of having the family wait for me to prepare something at home. We had been told El Potro was a family place with great tasting Mexican food. After dining there, I would say only half of that statement is true. Our party of 7 arrived at 6:40. The waiting area is a bit awkward as the bench runs up to the outside door & is immediately adjacent to the men's room. It also affords a view of the busy kitchen with servers coming in & out frequently which makes you feel like you're in the way. We were seated within 15 minutes. The host & server were both friendly & helpful. Our drink orders were taken & chips/salsa were given & replenished. Our party ordered Tacos al Carbon Authentico, Burrito el Cazador, Steak Fajita Quesadilla, Chimichanga la Gloria, Carnitas Michoacan (the special), kids chicken tacos & kids cheeseburger. The dishes came out in a timely manner & the presentation was pleasant. The first 4 dishes were satisfactory; however, I was disappointed in the special. The pork tips were very under seasoned & the rice & black beans were not very fresh tasting. My son had the same complaint about his chicken tacos--the chicken wasn't seasoned. My daughter ordered the child's cheeseburger sliders & they were very overcooked. The size of our family leads us to be quite discerning when choosing a restaurant. If I can cook similar dishes at home, for a fraction of the cost, in the same amount of time I walk away from my dining experience with a "bad" taste in my mouth. While El Potro was a pleasant dining experience due to the host & our server, the fact that it's a Mexican restaurant raises the seasoning bar and our experience there last night fell short.

My wife and I have visited here several times, and have been pleased with everything from the wait staff, service times, and especially the food.... the fajita quesadilla is awesome. Not to mention the FREE cheese dip as soon as you sit down. Their parking lot is always full!

We arrived on a Friday night to see a overflowing parking lot. We were prepared for a 20-30 min. wait but to our surprise, we were in in 5 min. As we watched the service, it was apparent that they were very efficient at busing tables and serving people. I never saw a table empty for more than a few seconds. At the same time, I never felt rushed. Our server was nice, but business like and efficient. I really don't want to be best friends with my server. So I was glad she didn't make a big deal about "I'm so and so and I will be your server." They put chips, salsa and a bowl of delicious Queso. The first bowl is free. I love that! We ordered soon after we arrived and had our very hot plates within a reasonable time. I ordered the seafood Chimichanga. I have been on the search for the ultimate Chimichanga for years. Don Chalitos had the best, but their's is not what it used to be. While I can't say my search is over, I can say that I have found one that matches my expectations. It was excellent in every way. The cheese was perfect, they put plenty of shrimp in as well. It only had shrimp, so it really isn't a seafood as much as a shrimp chimy. Nevertheless, it was perfect. There aren't many Mexican restaurants in our area, but this is far better than one would expect in any part of town. I am glad they are located close to me. The rest of the world will have to drive 30 miles, I will only have 4 miles. I will be back and often! Dr. Darrel Ray,

Excellent Mexican restaurant! I enjoyed the salsa, full of flavor and the complimentary cheese dip. I have tried the chicken and the steak there and they are both very well seasoned. The food is authentic and reasonably priced. The fried ice cream is worth trying. For I-70 travelers this is right by Waffle House and worth stopping at for dinner with the family.

Excellent food and service. Very generous portions and they serve free queso with your chips and salsa. Nice decor. We will be back!

It would be great if I could rate the service and food separately. The food was really good. Our waitress was a bit annoying. We had a group of five people, she inserted herself into several of our conversations. We ate and ordered more drinks while we visited. An hour before closing time, she actually asked us to leave. Said we had been there long enough. Between the five of us, we ordered $175.00 worth of food and drinks. We also left her a $25.00 tip!! Just rude! Was not impressed. Don't go here thinking you can do more than just eat. Not the place to meet friends and visit with them for a bit!

Service started out slow, taking an order was a chore was not as structured as it could have been. The food was good but again taking orders took awhile. I would go back and give another try

So I really think I'd give this place a 4 star rating because the food is good, portions generous, service decent, blah blah blah. I am STINGY with a 5 star rating but I am giving this place my 5 star blessing because of the manager on duty today who was a superstar. It's easy to see why this place has gotten progressively better since it's been open. We were there for lunch and the strong leadership displayed by the floor manager was obvious. He was everywhere in the restaurant, not wandering uselessly like so many managers do. He was productive, helping everywhere and doing the little things that lift the burden off busy servers while checking on customers and noticing things before you had to ask. It's easy to see why his staff was just as productive and pleasant as he was. Good food and service are fine, but the intangibles are what elevate or destroy a business. If the other managers/owners of this place share his work ethics, this place will continue to put places like Jalisco's out of business. I am a fan!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
